Call For Ban Of Yaz, Yasmin And Ocella Birth Control
Health and consumer advocates are calling for the Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") to ban Yasmin, Yaz and Ocella -- brand names under which the birth control drug combination drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol are sold -- because of the pill’s potential to cause blood clots, heart attack and stroke. Yasmin, for example, was introduced in the U.S. in 2001 and is now also available as a generic. Revenues from Yasmin sales are reported to have reached $500 million in 2007, and its popularity can be attributed to the fact that some unpleasant side effects of other birth control pills, such as acne and unwanted hair, are diminished. But some Yasmin users have allegedly reported serious health impacts, including inability to conceive after stopping use as well as heart and other health problems. Indeed, Public Citizen petitioned the FDA in 2007 to ban the Yaz birth control pill for similar reasons.

I have just come off of taking Ocella/yasmin and I have been so sick. Everything from weight gain to hair loss to extreme depression (non of which I have ever struggled with before. I have heard from others that this is a common side effect when you stop Oscella.
I used to take Yasmin, & did so for a good 3 or 4 years. I never had any problems with it... that is until my insurance switched me to the generic brand, Ocella. I've been reading on many other websites that Ocella is causing many other women the same horrible symptoms I have now lived with for the past year. I now suffer from severe bloating & distention of the abdomen, severe abdominal pain, extreme hunger, sore breasts, IBS like symptoms, nausea, dizziness, and hair loss/thinning. I didn't put two-&-two together until recently though. I have now been on Ocella for about a year, & I realized that about a year ago is when all my symptoms started to occur. I attributed it to possible IBS, stress, ovulation, or stomach ulcer. Now my symptoms have continued for a year and have now progressively gotten worse. I am now considering switching back to Yasmin or possibly another, cheaper brand.
