Do you own or lease a recent model year, high end car equipped with low profile tires such as an Audi, a BMW, or a Lexus? Have you suffered from tire blowouts and expensive rim damage on your car? Well, those low profile tires and fancy rims sure look good in the driveway. But they can cost you a lot of money in unnecessary repairs, and high speed blowouts on the highway can be very dangerous. So what’s the problem? It’s really a design problem. The low profile tires don’t have a lot of rubber between the road and the tire rim. So when you hit a pothole, the rubber compresses, the rims get dinged or bent, and the tire wall quickly develops a bubble. If you don’t notice the bubble, odds are pretty high that you’ll suffer a blowout soon. These tires are very expensive to replace – often costing around $400 per tire – and the rims are equally expensive. The problem is exacerbated by winters like we had this year and the poor road conditions in the northern half of the country. When you bought or leased the car, did the product brochures advise you of these issues?
