Vizio Refuses To Repair Defective Televisions

Television maker Vizio, which sells lower-tier LCD, high definition, flat screen televisions, has reportedly been advising the owners of its relatively new, but out-of-warranty sets that their broken televisions cannot be repaired. The company instead offers these customers the chance to purchase a refurbished replacement set from them, often at a price higher that of a new Vizio television.

At least one consumer, who owned a nearly $2,000, 55-inch television, reported having complained in writing to Vizio’s corporate headquarters about what certainly appears to be company-wide policy of Vizio’s customer service unit advising consumers that their televisions, which are as little as one month beyond the factory warranty, are totally “unrepairable.” The failure reported primarily involves breaking of the television’s backlight unit, which lights the screen from inside the set. Scores of consumers have reported that out-of-the-blue, their Vizio sets, which are not old, have gone black and never worked again.

Indeed, a consumer complaint website reports that it has received over 61 complaints about Vizio televisions failing, and the lack of any satisfactory response from Vizio to recurrent complaints of sets breaking shortly after warranty expiration without any repair solution offered by Vizio customer service.

While Vizio sets are not the only manufacturer’s sets that break, HD television guru, Gary Merson,  polled other well-know television makers who stated that they do not have a “unrepairable” TV policy; and that they do try to fix problem sets, and when a situation arises where a repair would really be uneconomical, they make every attempt to replace the set with one of their new sets at a significant discount so as to keep the consumer satisfied and with their brand set in that consumer’s home.

Several of the top-tier TV makers, such as Samsung, and even mid-tier electronics producers, like Best Buy, which markets a house brand called Insignia, reported that their TVs are repairable whether in or out of warranty, including those with failed backlights. The repairs on the older sets that are beyond the factory warranty are fixed at a reasonable repair cost.

If you own a Vizio, LCD, flat-screen, HD television that has had a blacked out backlight, or some other defect, and Vizio has refused to repair the set, please contact us to discuss your legal rights

Vizio shuld be sued , the practice of this company shuld not continue. I have done extentive research on vizio and my television went out after could not affor another one offer me one that seem like a deal of a recertified tv but charged me 120 dollars for the tv . I am afraid that the have swindle me twice I WILL NEVER BUY AGAIN VIZIO

My vizio tv is also having a back lite problem but mine is strobing. A vizio rep said they would take care of it even though it is off warranty because I own 2 42″ vizio tv’s.She had me fax the original receipt to prove ownership and upon calling back as instructed I was not allowed to talk with the same rep and they refused to help with expense which was quoted as 305.00 by hdtv repair. They did offer me a refurbished tv for 600.00 which is more than WalMart sells it new. What even makes them think I would buy off them again after this BS. I am writing corporate but do not have any faith they will fix the problem. This sounds like it should be a recall issue to begin with to me.

I bought our Vizio LCD flatscreen tv 3 years ago with our stimulus check. Today we turned it on and it was flashing like a strobelight. It was enough to make you have a seizure! We ruled out it being our satellite receiver and then I called Vizio. The customer service woman told us to unplug the tv, press the on/off button for 30 seconds then plug it back in. The tv was still strobing. She said well I think your backlight. I pointed out the tv was only 3 years old but that didn’t matter. She gave me the number to a repair company that was “near me”. I asked where the company was & she didn’t know. I asked her if I was going to have to pay to fix my 3 year old tv that I paid $700 for? She said “yes, I’ve done everything I can do from here, and it is out of warranty”. I told her that my husband and I had both lost our jobs since we got the tv & that I thought it was ridiculous that my tv that is only 3 years old no longer works. I told her that we would never buy another Vizio, that we would only buy a Sanyo or something because the Sanyo we bought 13 years ago for $250 still worked just fine. She told me that was my choice. I ended the call. I called the company “ITI” to see what repair would cost. From what the menu says it appears that it is a company just for Vizios. Hmmmm. I guess they’ve already got my money so they don’t give a care that their product is broken already. And I know the box indicated that the tv would last 5 to 10 years with an average daily use far below what we would have it on!

i purchased a vizio 42 inch LCD TV on 04/2010 and the screen went black today, i called the customer service but they refused to repair the TV or provide me a new set for some discout price, instead they gave me customer service number of ITI, saying this is the company which vizio uses to repair within the warranty period, this is totally ridiculour and something needs to be done to stop Vizio from exploiting american customers.

I purchased a 47″ Vizio the beginng of 2010 and it went out a week after warranty. They rfused to fix it and offered a discount on a refurb unit. I took the only offer they gave me since at this time I had several other new appliances going out left and right (LG microwave and phone, a garbage disposal, a whirlpool dryer, a GE dishwasher…)All companies have some excuse or extra fee that is not accepted by warranty. I refuse to set the tv at the curb and I’m waiting for some repair shop to accept repairs at a cheap fee. I want every dime back plus extra for the trouble they’ve caused. Frivolous my A$$!

I PURCHASED A VIZIO 42IN 11/25/2010 FROM SAMS CLUB AND HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS. VIZIO HAS REPLACED IT TWICE AND THIS LAST TV CONTINUES TO HAVE THE SAME SOUND ISSUE AS THE LAST TWO. I HAVE REQUESTED A REFUND, I HAVE REQUESTED A DIFFERENT MODEL AND HAVE BEEN DECLINED. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER VIZIO PRODUCT AND I WILL CONTINUE TO SHARE THIS STORY WITH ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN. I HAVE NO IDEA WHO TO CONTACT VIA PHONE OR EMAIL TO POSSIBLE GET THIS FIXED. I DON’T WANT TO CONTINUE THIS PATTERN OF REPLACING THE TV AND FEEL AS THOUGH I’VE BEEN DUP’D OUT OF $600. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

I purchased a Vizio 50 inch TV and worked and looked great. Then one day as I was watching TV it just went blank. I thought nothing of it and thought I threw a breaker but that wasn’t the problem. The problem is that the on off button went bad. This TV is less then 4 years old and Vizio offered me a refurbished for more then it is worth.

  • Terry Benningfield

In December of 2007 I bought a 50 inch Vizio TV. In September of 2011 it went out and would not turn back on. The on/off switch went out on it and we called vizio and they stated it was no longer covered and that if I wanted to I could get a refurbished TV for 746.00 dollars. They would not give me any kind of help to get my TV fixed. I will never buy another one as long they continue to make them due to the fact of poor service.

Our 42″ Vizio LCD went black, with no sound. It is just short of 5 years old. Vizio tech support, though prompt and polite, offered no solution other than me paying to have it repaired. It seems that for $1300.00, a TV ought to last longer than 5 years.

  • travina hamm

mine flashes like a strobe lite, they told me it couldnt be fix

  • alfred dewhurst

Back light failure 47″ VIZIO 2 1/2 yr old purched from Costco. Vizio tech support told me nothing is covered by the company to repair.

  • Tim Packer

My 42″ Vizio BBE Digital Flat Screen picture or backlight unit has went out. However, I do get sound on all stations and channels that receive a signal. I receive no tech support otherthan warranty information and the option to pay for out of warranty service.

  • Al

We bought a 42″ Vizio LCD HDTV in 12-29-06 with a manufacture date of 11-06. The TV went out on 8-17-10 with it blinking in and out between picture and a blue screen. We have been fighting this since.
I was able to connect me vcr’s output to the TV analog input and with my blueray HDMI to the tv’s HDMI. We have a picture and can watch it just fine. I think the tuner went out. Vizio tech service gave me the number to ITI, but to no avail.
These people are no help whatsoever.
    Don’t buy from them!

NOT ONLY DID MY SCREEN GO BLACK, BUT SMOKE STARTED TO BILLOW OUT THE BACK. I’VE ONLY HAD THE TV FOR FOUR YEARS.

  • Rob

Hi. Bought the 55″ M550SV in April, and the t.v. Has been turning off on me many times during the program. Visio is sending someone tomorrow, but I have read many posts in which seems to be a process to cOver their ground. Warranty ends in a few months. If there is anything going on against the company, please let me know. Spent. A lot of hards money to appreciate something I can’t enjoy it’s purpose is a rip off to the consumer, whom deserves a quality product.

Brian-we’re in the same situation.  We bought at Costco about 3 yrs ago with same problems.  You’ve encouraged me to reach out to Costco to help.  Any advise on the approach?

Vizio sound bar, less than 30 days out of the box, will not work by remote (I have to operate it manually). Put new battery in the remote; did not help.
Vizio TV: Will not work if connected to my Onkyo TX-SR608 home theater system. Cust. support says, and I quote, “there is not an issue with your TV.” Unquote. So I said, “Really?, My Vizio TV does not work with my home theater system and you say ‘there is not an issue’.” I’m taking it and the sound bar back to where I bought it and buy a SAMSUNG like I should have done in the first place!!

Same thing. $1800 on a 42″ Plasma. After less than 2 years, POP, screen went black!!!

I just left feedback on the Vizio website.  We also bought a flat screen around 2009 at Costco.  We’re on the 3rd TV they have replaced because it keeps breaking down.  What a rip off!

  • David Hernandez

We purchased a 55″ Vizio at Sam’s and one to two months after the warranty was up my screen also darkened on the lower half of the screen. I contacted Sam’s and they said they couldnt help me. i called vizio and it was obivious she was reading from a pretyped message. All she said was turn off the tv unplug it press on/off for ten seconds and if that didnt work there was nothing she could do except refer me to a tech in my city. i wrote leters to vizio and never received a response, i contacted someone at Sam’s which also met with neg results. I finally contacted a TV tech in my city and he stated that it would be to expensive to fix my TV and that i was better off buying a new one. he said the problem was very expensive and that his labor to attempt to fix it would be way more expensive than the TV was worth. He was very surprised that the TV was only 1yr old at the time that my tv broke.

    Hello,

Just as many people have mentioned here, I also have problems with my 50″ plasma screen going black. I’ve tried calling Vizio to get a resolution to the issue to no avail. I bought the set from Sears only 3-4 years ago and has not been used anywhere near the quoted number of hours of use. Needless to say, I’m not happy with the product or the company. I could understand if this was a “one-off” problem but after researching this for some time now, I’m of the mindset that it’s a fundamental design flaw.
