Allstate’s “Free” Roadside Assistance Program Isn’t Free

Allstate appears to be offering customers a great deal:  Call to get an insurance quote and, just for making the call, you get "free" lifetime enrollment in Allstate’s roadside assistance program.  Smart consumers might think that instead of paying money to enroll in AAA or another roadside assistance program, it’s cheaper to call Allstate and get free enrollment.

But there’s a catch.  Allstate’s roadside assistance program actually charges for roadside assistance.  In other words, there is nothing free about it – when you need roadside assistance, you call the number and then you pay for the service provided.  This can result in charges of over $75 each time your car needs to be towed, so, if your car gets towed, you will end up paying more for Allstate’s "free" service than you would if you paid for a typical roadside assistance program.

Meiselman, Denlea, Packman, Carton & Eberz P.C. is investigating a class action lawsuit to redress Allstate’s deceptive advertising.  Please contact us immediately to discuss your legal rights, if you purchased Allstate insurance because you were tricked by Allstate’s "free" roadside assistance advertising campaign or if you cancelled your contract with a real roadside assistance program because of Allstate’s deceptive advertisements.

The ads clearly say “Pay only if you use it.” Every ad I’ve heard has been specific in that regard.

@Ed: I just heard one of their commercials on the radio and it most definitely did NOT say anything like “pay only if you use it.” It said “free.” Last time I checked “pay only if you use it” and “free” are not listed together in the thesaurus.

Well my car needs a jump. So I call AllSTATE and guess what? I don’t have roadside assistance?! They want 60 dollars from me. I have both my home and car insurance through these people and they leave me stranded like this. SCAM SCAM SCAM! When I had Progressive they never charged me an extra penny for their roadside assistance.

The program is not “free” to customers or members. It provides what is termed as a discount rate on a pay per use. This is not very thrifty as you still have to pay for the service, mileage, and additional fees. In San Antonio, the usual tow costs $75.00 so I do not see any discount, and you would get the same price just by calling around or even a cheaper price. The $50 auto lockout, tire change, and jump start is over priced too. My business offers a $35 no hidden fee roadside assistance, which is quite cheaper than the $50 they quoted per service. I strongly suggest considering your insurance policy, a cell phone roadside assistance add on, or even a motor club membership….
